It's surprising when I look back at just how many experiences have influenced my designing career. As a young girl I loved old things, the theatre and drawing, all of which I still enjoy today. Antiques taught me about the endurance of quality, the theatre about light, costume and detail, while drawing taught me to see. When I came to the Gold Coast to live I managed the first colour film laboratory which sparked my interest in photography and increased my sensitivity to colour and hue. This colour sense is reflected in the combinations I choose in the fabrics, ribbons, threads and trims I use in my kits.
I have always been fascinated by the mysteries of puppetry so after the birth of my first daughter I joined the Qld Theatre of Puppetry where my involvement with these creative women led to performing, script writing, set construction and puppet making. I think making cloth puppets has influenced my designs, as many have three dimensional elements and a rounded sculptural quality.
My greatest inspiration today comes from the freedom of creative collage and my favourite way to indulge in this richness of colour and texture is to explore the art of crazy patchwork. As anyone who has fallen under the spell of textiles knows, finding a way to bring together your collection of threads, charms, ribbons and fabrics is an itch waiting to be scratched.
I am so lucky to be able to fulfil my passion for making, designing treasures and sharing my love of embroidery with you. My aim is to help you grow and expand your creative spirit too.
